Pedaling the Blue Coast September 27 - October 7, 2005
Along the Atlantic Coast from Lisbon to the Algarve
Coasting along quiet back roads from Lisbon to the brilliant beaches of the Algarve, we’ll experience a memorable montage of Portugal: magnificent coastal seascapes, pastoral farmlands, working windmills, tiny fishing villages and historical monuments such as Henry the Navigator’s Navigational School perched on a wild headland over the Algarve’s blue waters.
Lodgings include a 16th century manor house, a luxurious country farm and two nights in our favorite castle overlooking a lovely estuary.

Day 2 - Azeitão
Late
morning transfer by private coach from Lisbon to our 16th century
manor house in the little village of Azeitão. Lunchtime finds us
feasting on the local catch of the day in Sesimbra, a nearby
fishing village nestled under huge rocky cliffs overlooking the
Atlantic. Later we'll visit a local castle, a hand-painted tile
factory and still have time to fit our bikes. This evening we
enjoy a festive champagne reception and welcome dinner.
Day 4 - Setúbal to Santiago de Cacem
On
this day’s ride we continue along the Atlantic coastline to the
southernmost point in Europe, Cabo de Sao Vincente, once called
“o fim do mondo” (the end of the world) near the town of
Sagres. Here Henry the Navigator established his famous
navigational school, where Magellan, Diaz, Cabral, and Vasco da
Gama apprenticed. Then its along the southern coast of the Algarve
to ancient Lagos, a lively walled historical town where many of
the Portuguese Discoverers actually left from. Lots of time in the
p.m. to explore the pedestrianized old center and its many
interesting sights such as the Church of Santo António with its
incredible gold work and the remnants of the only slave market in
Europe. This evening we'll whoop it up at one of Lagos' most
entertaining restaurants. 54 miles
