CRESTED BUTTE, Colorado Hiking, Whitewater Rafting, Mountain Biking
Come with us and take a break from the summer heat. Our days in Colorado will be filled with whitewater rafting, mountain biking and a spectacular all-day hike that includes a mountaintop picnic. Plus, plenty of time to chill-out and relax.
August 9-13 or August 14-18 2008
Crested Butte...where people in casual clothes meander the sidewalks, commute on mountain bikes and revel in the Colorado sunshine. A genuine sense of hospitality comes from such simple pleasures as wildflower hikes and bicycling through amazing scenery. Walk around this rustic, friendly town with its Victorian ambiance and reflections of turn-of-the-century mining life. The downtown business district is like a western movie set come to life. Colorful buildings, shops, movies, and local watering holes make for a terrific Old West welcome. You'll see why Crested Butte is designated a National Historic District.

ITINERARY
Day 1 We arrive in Gunnison at 9:18am. We'll load up the van and head to the Town of Gunnison to buy groceries for the trip. If everyone's game, maybe grab breakfast or a cup of coffee before driving to Crested Butte. The town of Crested Butte is only 30 miles away.
After settling into your room, we have plenty of time for hiking through fields of the best wildflowers in Colorado. We'll provide handbooks with descriptions and distances of all the local hiking trails.
Let's plan on happy hour later...on our huge sundeck. The vacation has begun!
Day 2 The bike shop is close by. We've rented bikes to keep for the next two days. We'll choose a trail based on everyone's skill level. There's everything from technical single track riding to easily traveled mountain roads.
The Crested Butte area has some of the best mountain biking in the country. Many believe that true mountain biking really began in Crested Butte. The more you ride here, the more you realize why mountain biking endures here. Many of the rides are long and epic. Even the shorter rides access incredible mountain scenery. There is so much beauty in these hills, that one of the best ways to see as much as you can in one summer is on a bike.
Day 3 Get ready for an exhilarating morning. We're schedule for a half-day trip to Almont to raft the Upper Taylor River. This is the most popular location for river rafting! The Taylor traverses through a wonderful alpine canyon with sheer cliffs and unbeatable scenery, with great whitewater from top to bottom! The Upper Taylor is a fast Class III+ section with nonstop fun and many great rapids.
Day 4 After breakfast, get your hiking boots on for this challenging 14 mile hike.
Mill Castle Trail #450 The trail begins on Mill Creek Road, a two wheel drive road. The trail goes over Storm Pass (12,440ft.) and very steep on both sides. This is one of the most scenic trails in the West Elk Wilderness, but only experienced hikers should attempt this 14.3 mile hike. The first 5 miles are easy, the rest is more strenuous.
Difficulty: Moderate
NOTE: If this sounds like more than you want to take on...Crested Butte is packed with other hiking trails. You can opt for a shorter hike if you like.
Our last night's dinner is in-town tonight. We have a place in mind that everyone is going love!
Day 5 It'll be tough leaving this beautiful place today. After breakfast we'll load up the van and head to the airport. Our flight leaves Gunnison at 12:43pm.
